Soldiers Grove Library News

Most remarkable Springtime Greetings!

This Saturday promises to be good weather for

Jane Schmidt and Finn to visit the Library!

(special visiting privileges for canines who are authors)

Saturday, April 21, 1pm

Soldiers Grove Library

Schmidt’s newest children’s book, Finnegan’s Springtime Guide, once again features her rat-terrier-mix buddy Finnegan as narrator. He invites the children on a search for spring and helps them discover bluebells, morels, spring beauties, turkey vultures, sandhill cranes, and more. Finn encourages the children to use their senses—look for bloodroots, smell skunk cabbage, and listen for spring peepers. The book includes a “Now You Know” section of interesting facts about each discovery, a glossary, and a section where children can write their own field notes.Finnegan’s Springtime Guide is a full-color book with photographs taken locally by the author in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. “It’s an interactive book,” says Schmidt, “that inspires children to get outside and explore nature.”

Hope to see you there!

About the Canvas Project…

Today we are watching the weather, but have one more workshop with Pat Vance.

Everyone is invited to create an art piece inspired by Wisdom in Nature, to contribute to the Kickapoo Valley Reserve’s Creative Community Canvas Project

fundraiser. Pat has agreed to start at 1:30pm today. It’s a drop-in program, so after school time can work for families too. We have the 6"x6" canvases available and some supplies but you can also bring anything imaginable to add:) If you have already picked up a canvas & would like to finish it here, that’s great. If you do not use your canvas that’s okay, please return it. Remember, your work of art must be back at the Library or the Reserve by next Monday, Feb. 26th. We have some amazing canvases on display already, come see them. What a fun program!

Soldiers Grove Library News

Greetings Everyone, It’s February and we’re on our way out of winter!

This month the Library is collaborating with the Kickapoo Valley Reserve http://kvr.state.wi.us/Home in support of their "Creative Communities Canvas Project". This is an inspiring fundraiser for the Reserve, which costs nothing for you to participate and has WISDOM as its theme. Participants receive a 6-inch-by 6-inch canvas to artistically interpret the word Wisdom asit pertains to nature. The art canvases will ultimately be sold through an online auction with proceeds going to the KVR Education and Events Program. Canvases are available to pick up at the KVR Visitor Center or here at the Soldiers Grove Library, to be returned by Feb 26th, either at the Reserve or the Library. Next week we will have two opportunities to work with Pat Vance, a local artist and painter, to create a canvas for the project. Workshops with Pat: Monday, Feb 19th, 1:30 pm and Tuesday, Feb 20 at 10am.

Bring some paints/pencils, fibers/collage materials or whatever supplies you can imagine for your project and we’ll have some fun creating together! Don’t think you can’t be artistic. Yes you can and there’s wisdom in that:)

Soldiers Grove Library Event

December greetings, dear Friends!

Next week at the Library we’ll have a visit with a local author, Marcia Halligan. Her new book is called Hidden in the 13th Moon, a collection of stories and poems that reveal the rich texture of rural life. Organized around the seasons, it addresses universal themes of life woven into a myriad of creature encounters; from domestic pets and farm animals to soaring eagles and river-dwelling muskrats. Marcia will read from her book next Thursday afternoon, December 7th at 1:30pm. A free event, open to all, with refreshments!

Hope you can attend,
warmly,

Soldiers Grove Library News

Hello Friends,

Summer’s at it’s peak and the Library has been busy!

This coming Saturday we are having a program on the Eclipse
Saturday afternoon, July 22, 1:30

The Great American Eclipse

On August 21, the United States will experience a total eclipse of the sun for the first time since 1979. Learn all about eclipses and how you can be wowed by this one. John Heasley is an astronomy educator with Driftless Stargazing and a Solar System Ambassador with NASA/JPL A limited supply of solar glasses will be given away at the program for safe eclipse viewing. You don’t want to miss this! Poster attached

The Summer Reading Program this year is more of an independent-type. Families can come to the library as convenient for them and take a story walk through the courtyard, write a note to the librarian telling something they remember about the story and put their name in the hat for the T-shirt drawing. Reading slips are also available to take home and record 2 hours of time spent with books, for another chance in the drawing. Pat Gilbert’s design for the colorful shirts this year is awesome, with a theme of Build a Better World. Yes!

Hope to see you soon,

~Cele
