Hello Friends,

Summer’s at it’s peak and the Library has been busy!

This coming Saturday we are having a program on the Eclipse
Saturday afternoon, July 22, 1:30

The Great American Eclipse

On August 21, the United States will experience a total eclipse of the sun for the first time since 1979. Learn all about eclipses and how you can be wowed by this one. John Heasley is an astronomy educator with Driftless Stargazing and a Solar System Ambassador with NASA/JPL A limited supply of solar glasses will be given away at the program for safe eclipse viewing. You don’t want to miss this! Poster attached

The Summer Reading Program this year is more of an independent-type. Families can come to the library as convenient for them and take a story walk through the courtyard, write a note to the librarian telling something they remember about the story and put their name in the hat for the T-shirt drawing. Reading slips are also available to take home and record 2 hours of time spent with books, for another chance in the drawing. Pat Gilbert’s design for the colorful shirts this year is awesome, with a theme of Build a Better World. Yes!

Hope to see you soon,

~Cele

Hello Friends,

Happy Summer! Here are 2 events happening this week at the Library.

Thursday, June 29, 7pm, local author John Sime reads from his book, Ain’t No Elephants in Timbuktu. In 1976 John served in the US Peace Corps in the West African republic of Mali. He returned in 2003 and observing the decades of changes there, wrote this book of essays & poems. It will be an entertaining evening!

StoryWalk! What’s that??? here’s a description

StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way for children — and adults! — to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children’s book are attached to stakes, which are installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you’re directed to the next page in the story. StoryWalks® have been installed in 50 states and 11 countries including, Germany, Canada, England, Bermuda, Russia, Malaysia and Pakistan! They are always received with appreciation.

Story Walk debuted at the Village playground located in the “Old Town” park during Dairy Days. The Walk will continue, set up at various locations, beginning in the courtyard behind the Library. All are invited to enjoy the Walk any Tuesday or Saturday through July. Several different books will be featured during the summer, an independent activity for children to enjoy and also earn a chance to win a legendary T-shirt, designed once again by Pat Gilbert.

Let’s Go on a Story Walk! Any Tuesday or Saturday in July
Stroll through the Libary courtyard, follow the numbers and read a story!

A collaboration of the Soldiers Grove Library and Healthy Roots of Crawford County

And save the date for The Great Eclipse program on Sat. 7/22, 1:30pm! Get ready for the event on August 21. We have glasses for safe viewing… More to come on that.

Hope to see you soon,
~Cele

Greetings Friends,

The merry month of May is almost here, and we have an event coming up next week at the library!

Jane Schmidt reads from her latest book, Thursday, May 4, 7pm

Not a Perfect Fit: Stories From Jane’s World , featuring some of her most beloved escapades as well as over 30 never-before-seen stories.

“Jane Schmidt documents the essential day-to-day of rural Wisconsin life with a deft balance of sentiment, reportage, and humor. City mouse, country mouse, newcomer or old-timer, you will find yourself nodding, grinning, and sometimes dabbing at your eyes as you read these stories.” —Michael Perry, best-selling author of Truck: A Love Story and The Jesus Cow

Signed copies of this and her other book (for children of all ages) Finnegan’s Superior Adventure, will be available for purchase.
Come visit with Jane, it’s always a hoot!

The Library’s 🌱Seed Swap 🌱is on-going through the planting season, with a big basket of intriguing varieties upstairs on the mezzanine. Flowers, vegetables — take some, bring some or just browse.

And Story Time continues with Ms Cecilia Tuesday mornings at 10am, May 9th & 23rd. This year’s Summer Reading program has the wonderful theme of "Build A Better World". Details of that to come.

Springtime Greetings Everyone,

Sun’s out, warm breezes and we are definitely heading into Spring! Here are some events coming up at the library.

Seed Swap & Share #2 with Lisa Acosta ~ Saturday, March 25, 9am-noon
Bring your extra, fresh-for-2017 seeds, non-GMO and labeled by variety

Swap with other gardeners for new crops & varieties

Share excess seeds so that more people in the community can be empowered to grow their own food (& flowers too!) The swap is ongoing upstairs at the library and will continue through the planting season. Bring some, take some!

And speaking of upstairs, have you browsed the library’s local history room lately? We now have all of The Kickapoo Scout newspapers published in Soldiers Grove, 1907-1979. Thanks to a generous donation we were able to purchase them on microfilm from the Wisconsin State Historical Society. With the added donation of a film reader, patrons can browse through the years & get a real life picture of the old days! We have framed historic maps on the wall, too. One is a large map (in color) of the 1878 Northeast Quarter of Crawford county, including Clayton, Scott, Haney & Utica townships. Another shows the Business Listings of that year, including an index of landowners and beautiful engravings of the old buildings. These are wonderful gifts to the library’s local history room. New things are always coming in so stop by anytime during regular library hours & take a look!

StoryTime continues with Ms Cecilia on the second and fourth Tuesdays in April and May, 10am. Join her for stories, games, crafts & fun!

Jane Schmidt has another book coming out, this one is more of her delightful stories about life…

Save the date for her visit, May 4, Thursday, 7pm. More on that later:)

John Sime has a new book as well and he will visit the library in June, so stay tuned for that.

With warm wishes,

~Cele
