Dan Nedrelo, Critter Man
The Gays Mills and Soldiers Grove Public Libraries are happy to bring Dan Nederlo: Critter Man to a creek side near you. Dan will bring several small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians for a hands-on experience you won’t want to miss. What better way to learn about the wild animals in our region than to get to see, feel, hear, and even smell them up close? The event will take place near the creek in Peterson Park, 103 Sunbeam Blvd E, which is behind Burkum’s Hardware in Soldiers Grove, or in the Soldiers Grove Library if it’s raining.

And next week:
Award-winning band leader and accordionist Mike Schneider brings his ‘Pint Size Polkas’ to the Community Room at the CCC in Gays Mills. This fun-filled 45-minute show will have kids of all ages laughing, moving and learning with Mike’s unique blend of magic, humor, and wonderful polka music. The show is titled ‘Music and Magic from the Polkaverse’ so we’ll be learning about our universe and space travel. Go to www.pintsizepolkas.com/video_2019.htm for a sneak-peek. This FREE event is co-sponsored by the Soldiers Grove and Gays Mills Public Libraries.

See you soon!

Hello Friends,

We have an amazing local rock find on display at the library right now, which made me think of having a program about our local geology. Rick Redfield suggested I contact Phil Burgess, who agreed to give a talk, and Rick was kind enough to write this about the event:

Come to the Soldiers Grove Library on Thursday, June 6 at 6pm and meet an outstanding local expert in geology, "Rockman" Phil Burgess, for a fascinating session on the geologic history of our region. Phil is an amazing resource, with a passion for science, especially geology and meteorology. Delighting in our local geologic treasures, he has a renowned personal collection of fossils and rocks that he has amassed and documented over the years. Through his stories we will learn much about the ancient history of the Driftless Region we call home.
All participants are invited to bring their favorite "mystery" rock or fossil finds and Phil will explain them to you."

Hope to see you there!~Cele

SG Library short note

Hello Friends,

You may have heard that the Library took in some water recently. Just to let you know, thanks to a quick response by volunteers and staff covering shelves,

moving furniture & artwork, nothing inside was damaged as water leaked in through the ceiling due to an ice jam above the children’s area. The dripping has stopped and things are back to normal. Repairs will begin when things dry up completely.
Happy Spring!

Greetings Everyone,

It’s February and believe it or not, we’re on our way out of winter!

This month the Library is once again collaborating with the Kickapoo Valley Reserve http://kvr.state.wi.us/Home in support of their "Creative Communities Canvas Project". This is an inspiring fundraiser for the Reserve, which costs nothing for you to participate and has FLIGHT IN NATURE as its theme. Participants receive a 6-inch-by 6-inch canvas to artistically interpret this themeasit pertains to nature. The art canvases will ultimately be sold through an online auction with proceeds going to the KVR Education and Events Program. Canvases are available to pick up at the KVR Visitor Center or here at the Soldiers Grove Library, to be returned by Feb 25th, either at the Reserve or the Library. We’ll have two opportunities to work together with Patty Bergemann, a local artist and painter, and her energetic assistant, Jorryn Foster, to create your own canvas for the project.
KVR Community Canvas Project Workshops with Patty and Joryyn: Two Wednesdays, Feb 13th and Feb 20th, 2-5pm.

Drop in at any point during the afternoon, materials will be provided. You can also bring some paints/pencils, fibers/collage materials or whatever supplies you can imagine for your project and we’ll have some fun creating together! Don’t think you can’t be artistic. Just cast your hesitations to the windchill and come out to play!

Story Time with Ms Cecilia continues each Tuesday morning at 10am. Next week will be a field trip to the Post Office to see how letters get delivered and to mail some Valentines!

And finally, mark your calendar for another exciting travel adventure with Monique and Phillip Hooker! This time we’ll visit Budapest and Slovenia, with a taste of Eastern Europe besides! Travels With Monique, Tuesday, February 26th, 5pm. More details to come…

Hello Dear Friends, Snowy season’s greetings!

We have two special events coming up right after Thanksgiving.

Wonderful Weeds! Getting to know our backyard herbal friends

Join local naturalist, herbalist, and author Rachel Wolf, (Herbal Adventures: backyard excursions and kitchen creations for kids and their families) for an herbal adventure right here in the library!

Discover the wonderful weeds growing right in your own backyard. From dandelion to mullein; plantain to elderberry, we’ll discover that there’s much to love about the wild plants that grow in and around our neighborhoods. Touch, smell, and even taste a few wild edibles that are common here in the Driftless region. Then get your hands dirty making your own herbal “seed bombs” with native plant seeds. Back at home you can toss them into the corner of your garden, and see what helpful plants spring up next year! All ages are welcome.

See you at the Library and have a wonderful Holiday!

We have so much to be Thankful for…
