Soldiers Grove Library News

Hello Dear Friends,

Beautiful Springtime has arrived! And there are two events coming up this week at the Library.

Join Mexican Biologist Omaru Heras Ornelas at the Soldiers Grove Public Library on Tuesday, May 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. to learn about the environmental struggles going on south of our border.

Dealing with serious contamination in the rivers of Morelos, Mexico, it was decided that the only solution was to bring all the sectors of civil society together in a massive campaign to raise awareness in each village, clean up the tributaries, and install simple systems to ecologically deal with household wastewater.

Omaru helped spearhead this project in the sacred mountains of Tepoztlan, which involved a socioeconomic diagnosis of the surrounding communities, water quality testing, biological surveys, and of course, a massive public education campaign.

There will be an opportunity for some hands-on learning by making simple household water filtration systems. Materials will be provided and the systems can be taken home for a free-will donation.

Sponsored by The Crawford Stewardship Project, this event is free and open to everyone. Some light snacks and beverages will be provided.

On Saturday, May 9th from 10:30 to 12 noon, The Prairie Enthusiasts will dedicate a bench located on the library patio in honor of Gail Adams of Soldiers Grove. Gail was a founding member of the original "Wisconsin Prairie Enthusiasts" and then a founding board member of the Southwest Wisconsin Chapter of the Prairie Enthusiasts. A film about the activities of the organization Gail so ardently supported will be shown following the dedication. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided.
